Top 3 Pieces of Paper in the Lives of US Adults

What’s the most important piece of paper in your life? 1,000 adults in the U.S. were surveyed (http://www.boisechoices.com/pieces-of-paper), and their responses included everything from medical records to stock certificates. But the Big 3 were official documents that we all know well:

  • Their own birth certificate
  • Their marriage license
  • Their Social Security card

I thought it would be more fun to expand this question to include some one-of-a-kind pieces of paper that have stood out in my life.  With this expanded view, my list includes:

  • a Johnny Unitas autograph on the back of a business card (my dad obtained it for me at a Green Bay Packer game in Milwaukee)
  • my high school and college diplomas
  • the offer letter for my first job out of college
  • the many homemade Father’s Day cards my kids have made for me through the years
  • the last picture of my dad and me (taken a week before he died) which is placed on a bulletin board right behind the monitor I am using right now in my office

What are the most important (or unique) pieces of paper in your life?  Add your comments and keep the discussion alive!

I run swim meets for my children who compete at these events. The two most critical times at these swim meets involve paper. Parents, Coaches and Officials at these events cannot wait to get the "Heat" sheets and find out what event their child is swimming. Its almost like being in line at 4:00AM on Black Friday. As these events continue to pursue the hi-tech world, paper becomes even more relevant. Even most of the tech savy people still have the paper sheets along with their cell because who can see all the information on a small cell. As these systems go on line and then "crash" every turns to the paper results to see where their child finished. Even if you see it on your small cell, you still make the trip to the posted results where you can see this large piece of paper with the results of where each swimmer finished and if your kid improved their time.

Also, you see all the problems being caused now by phones with cameras and video. Public places including airports and high schools among many others have to warn people about taking these devices into restrooms. You do not have to worry about people taking paper into the restroom. You might even thank them if your stall has no paper.
